Today I learned...
that it’s actually an urban myth that NASA spent ‘millions’ on a pen that works in space while the Russians used pencils. The actual Space Pen was privately developed, and replaced pencils in both the US and Russian space programs due to the potential of pencils spontaneously burning in space. Source
